Cashmere’s benefits

Cashmere fibre is a fine, living thing, sourced from Mongolia’s Capra hircus goat. Every year, in spring, the undercoat which protects these animals from the harshness of Himalayan winters is gathered using combs, following an ages-old tradition. We owe these soft goats our cashmere fabrics. Among the advantages of this cashmere are its softness, its insulating and thermoregulating properties as well as how resistant it is. Unlike other types of wool, high-quality cashmere fibre is water-friendly. When in water, it recovers the shape and softness of a new piece of clothing

Cashmere’s benefits

Why wear cashmere? Specifically, why wear Bompard cashmere?

All cashmeres are not the same! As a pioneer worker of this unrivalled material sometimes nicknamed the Queen of Wool (“la reine des laines”), Maison Bompard has committed itself to an ethical and eco-responsible stand since it was founded, in 1985.

Over 90% of Bompard’s cashmere collection has an OEKO-TEX Made in Green label certifying that its creations have been made free of materials which are harmful to health, in factories which are environmentally friendly with socially responsible working conditions.

Today, Bompard is taking further steps with THE GOOD CASHMERE STANDARD® (GCS) label, which was produced in collaboration with animal rights specialists and independent experts in cashmere manufacturing.

Through its resolutely timeless creations, which are of the highest quality, Maison Bompard offers remarkable and sustainable comfort.

What are the advantages of cashmere?

The cashmere fibre selected to create Bompard pullovers is six times finer than baby hair, meaning it is even silkier. Unlike other types of wool, it is lanolin-free and therefore hypoallergenic. Even the most sensitive skin types can be wrapped in its softness.

Cashmere is softer than other wools. It is also warmer, yet lighter: cashmere sets itself apart thanks to its extraordinary insulating properties.

It is renowned for being three times warmer than sheep’s wool and allows goats to withstand temperatures around -40 degrees.

A cashmere pullover is thermoregulating and hygroregulating: it will never feel stifling. This means that while a four, six, eight or twelve-ply 100%-cashmere cardigan will envelope you in its gentle warmth, allowing you to face the harshest of winters, an extrafine Bompard two-ply pullover will feel like a light veil in summer.

Wool is an active fibre which reacts to changes in body temperature: it can absorb a large amount of humidity while allowing it to evaporate. Whether in rainy or very hot weather, it adjusts, offering ideal comfort.

Fine and dense, cashmere wool, when knitted with care, offers great possibilities in terms of design. A variety of cuts, an ever-perfect straight fit which flatters your silhouette and enhances your natural elegance.

Another advantage: cashmere is naturally elastic and resilient and does not lose its shape: Bompard quality cashmere pullovers and cardigans are extraordinarily resistant. They retain their shape and do not stretch. Their cut remains durably perfect.

Unlike sheep’s wool, which requires more painstaking care, cashmere soft goat’s wool is known to be a hydrophilic material. It loves water!

You will enjoy wearing your cashmere with an ever-softer feel, the more you wash it. You should preferably wash it by hand, or machine-wash it using a wool (delicates) programme no hotter than 30°C, using a detergent for delicate clothing or, better yet, our special cashmere shampoo.

To prevent your cashmere pullovers and cardigans from rubbing against the drum, you should ideally place them in a wash bag. Dry your Bompard cashmere clothing item flat, on a sponge towel. You can iron your cashmere clothing items but this is not essential: they will regain their original shape once you put them on.

A defining property of cashmere, and a contradictory one! Cashmere can keep you as warm in winter as it can keep you cool in summer: its ability to capture air in little insulating pockets as well as to eliminate humidity means it is able to be both warm in winter and breathable in summer.

Whether your pullover, scarf, hoodie or any other cashmere creation is created using two, four, six, eight or twelve-ply material, it will remain light and compact. The wool’s insulating power does not just depend on how thick it is. This also depends on the ply count used, and, above all, on the cashmere’s ability to capture air.

Whilst eight or twelve-ply cashmere wool will protect you from the lowest of temperatures without feeling weighty or restrictive, a two-ply cashmere wool will wrap you up like a soft veil in the summer.

How does Eric Bompard stand for the highest-quality cashmere in its collections?

The softness of Bompard cashmeres to suit the whole family

All Bompard cashmeres are distinguished by their softness and this naturally means they are highly sought-after for children’s collections: cashmere wool is lanolin-free, and therefore hypoallergenic.

Perfectly suited to babies’ skin and to adults with baby-like, sensitive skin! Slippers and onesies, bonnets and hoods, snoods, muffles or pullover-and-trouser sets wrap our little ones up in their unrivalled softness with great elegance.

Warm in winter and cool in summer: a cashmere creation for every season

One of Maison Bompard’s cashmeres’ best advantages is that they can be worn all year round. The warmth of two, four or twelve-ply cashmeres allow you to face frosty winter weather. Meanwhile, extra-fine two-ply cashmeres, which are fine, with breathable properties, are perfect for summer or for in-between the seasons.

Adding to its 100% cashmere creations, Maison Éric Bompard offers pieces manufactured using a blend of cashmere and silk, cashmere and wool or cashmere and cotton. Find out more about these blended pieces in our article “Composition and blends”.
