A QUESTfor excellence

A NOBLE AND RARE MATERIAL

The Capra Arbas lives in Mongolia, at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. To ensure it can withstand winters when the temperatures can drop to -40°C, this little goat created a fleece made of warm silky fibres – cashmere fibre. The greater the temperature range, the fuller the fleece from the Capra Arbas. Every year, the weather plays a major role in the world’s production and we are very attentive to weather reports. Nature rules.

The raw material is obtained in the spring after brushing the goats, one at a time. The Capra Arbas produces one kilogram of raw material every year.

ONLY THE FINEST FIBERS ARE GATHERED BY ERIC BOMPARD:
200 grams of cashmere are used to make one pullover.

STEPS IN EXCELLENCE

Step 01
SORTING
Manual sorting, strand by strand, enables us to select the finest cashmere. The ultimate in sorting? The longest fibres from 36 to 40 mm, the thinnest fibres, about 15 microns as well as the whitest fibres.

Step 02
FULLING
The raw cashmere goes through several agitator cycles in large vats with natural soap to cleanse, remove oil and soften.

Step 03
DYEING
The Maison Bompard favours solution dyeing before spinning to stabilise colours and give them deeper, richer shades. Pigments are always of natural origin.

Step 04
SPINNING
About ten machines work as distaffs to proceed with spinning. The fibre becomes yarn.

Step 05
TWISTING
The yarn is twisted to strengthen it. Twisting is done with pairs of two-ply yarn. That is how we obtain pullovers that are 2-, 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-ply. Other Maisons traditionally make pullovers in stockinette using 2-ply cashmere. Eric Bompard uses the Maison’s inventiveness to create cashmere up to 24-ply.
